The feature tall cabinetry was conceived as the defining focal point of the space, finished in a highly distinctive bespoke charred texture that extends seamlessly across the doors and end panels. Great care was taken to conceal all fitting tolerances within the natural rhythm of the surface, allowing the cabinetry to read as a singular sculptural form. The texture itself was developed in close collaboration with the client, whose vision called for a deeply tactile, architectural finish. Following extensive research and development, it became clear that genuine charred timber would not provide the durability required for everyday use. Watson & Gabb therefore applied their specialist craftsmanship to create precision moulds of the original texture before casting the surfaces, achieving the character and depth of burnt timber while delivering the robustness needed for a functional kitchen environment.

In contrast, the remaining cabinetry was finished in a heavily patinated metallic treatment, designed to support the clients’ ambition for the tall units to stand apart while the island and surrounding joinery retained the presence of a refined monolithic plinth. This restrained architectural language informed every material decision throughout the space, including the worksurface selection, which was carefully colour-matched to the cabinetry to create a seamless, understated profile that would not detract from the overall concept. Patinated solid brass finger rails run consistently throughout, complemented by handleless sharknose detailing to maintain the purity of the forms. Internally, the cabinetry is finished in crown-cut oak veneer with a clear PU lacquer, while solid oak dovetail drawers further reinforce the balance of craftsmanship, warmth and material integrity that defines the project.
